In a scientific and technological age, everyone should be exposed to some degree to the theories, laws, applications and potentials of chemistry. The department provides students with a knowledge and understanding of the composition, structure, properties, and transformations of natural and man-made substances. Introductory courses in the department provide a broad overview of the science of chemistry for non-science and non-chemistry majors. Intermediate and advanced courses provide a solid foundation for those who wish to pursue graduate work in chemistry or for those who choose chemistry-related careers in industry, government and education. Qualifications for a career in teaching high school chemistry may be earned by enrolling in supplementary credits in education methodology. All courses are supplemented with laboratory classes in which the students become skilled in "wet" chemistry, and at the same time become acquainted with the advanced instrumental techniques.

The course requirement for the Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry is a minimum of 135 (244 ECTS) credit-hours of formal course work. In addition to the course-credit requirements, the equivalent of minimum 60 work-days of training in a chemistry related-facility approved by the department.

There are double-major programs with the Departments of Physics, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Molecular Biology and Genetics.

The Department of Chemistry is responsible for the organization and implementation of STS (Science, Technology, and Society) courses offered as HSS electives to science and engineering majors with junior or senior standing.

Introduction to the theory and application of potentiometric, electrogravimetric and coulometric methods of analysis. Analytical separations by extraction, ion exchange and chromatographic methods. Spectroscopic methods of analysis, atomic absorption and emission.

CHEM 241 Organic Chemistry for Engineering and Life Sciences (3+1+3) 4 ECTS 6 (Mühendislik ve Doğa Bilimleri İçin Organik Kimya)

Introduction to organic chemistry for engineering and life science majors. Subjects covered include alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, isomerism, resonance, aromatic compounds and substitution reactions. This course satisfies the prerequisite requirements for CHEM 214.

Carbonyl additions; Aldol and Claisen condensations; acetoacetic and malonic ester syntheses; Michael additions; other syntheses via enolates; amines; phenols; aryl halides and nucleophilic aromatic addition reactions; rearrangements; and an introduction to pericyclic reactions.

A seminar given by students in various fields of chemistry. A literature survey is made, the necessary audio visual aids are prepared and a well-organized coherent talk on the chosen subject is given.

Historical background and crime laboratory units. Physical evidence, its types and analyses: hair analysis, fiber analysis, trace element analysis for evidence. Drugs of abuse: types and identification; forensic toxicology; DNA as forensic evidence.

CHEM 412 Introduction to Nanochemistry (3+0+0) 3 ECTS 6 (Nanokimyaya Giris)

An introduction to the role of chemistry in nanoscience and nanotechnology: Bottom-up construction of nanomaterials using molecular interactions, surface properties, superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic surfaces, stimuli responsive surfaces and materials, synthesis of block copolymers, microphase separation of polymers and their use in nano fabrications, nanoparticles and polymer-nanoparticle composites.

An introduction to medicinal chemistry: Principles of pharmacokinetics, drug action at enzymes, drug action at receptors, metabolism, drug-drug interactions, prodrugs, drug delivery systems, cancer, central nervous system.

CHEM 417 Polymer Chemistry Laboratory (2+0+2) 3 ECTS 6 (Polimer Kimyasi Laboratuvari)

Experimental study of methods of polymer synthesis e.g. free radical, condensation and ring opening polymerizations. Characterization of polymers using nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, dilute solution viscometry, differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography and thermal gravimetric analysis.

CHEM 435 Introduction to Polymer Science and Technology (3+0+0) 3 ECTS 6 (Polimer Bilimi ve Teknolojisine Giriş)

Terms and concepts of addition, condensation and ring opening polymerization, synthesis of industrially important polymers, relationship between physical properties and molecular structure, molding, extrusion, injection, drawing and fiber forming operations used in polymer chemistry as well as additives that improve the properties of plastics.

Properties of ideal and real gases, first law of thermodynamics, basic concepts of thermochemistry. Second law of thermodynamics, direction of spontaneous change and entropy concept. CHEM 457 General Biochemistry (3+0+3) 4 ECTS 6 (Genel Biyokimya)

The chemistry and functions of the constituents of living cells covering carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, enzymatic catalysis, metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids with special attention given to interrelationships in metabolic rates of these important constituents of living cells. Three hours of laboratory per week.

Practical use of patents and international standards will be emphasized.
